It has been a long time since I have read such an emotional book. Starting off was difficult and required two attempts before my interest was truly and totally absorbed by this author. His use of words and description of places and events just draw you deeply into the personalities and the times of WW2, from the German aspect which is quite revealing as we only normally hear about these events from the Canadian/American side. Why is this not as popular as All Quiet on the Western Front? Like All Quiet, it's about a young German soldier in WWII, but this one has a great love story and was three times more pleasurable for me. *note* Don't read this if you're a recovering alcoholic because on every page, someone is drinking something.update: Oops, I mean WWI.

Epic.Rare. And very very real.

This is my second favorite Remarque book, after Arch of Triumph. Remarque's ability to portray war is uncomparable, the way he combines the beautiful with the primitive, loss and desperation with hopeless happiness and hatred with comradeship is heart wrentching. The beginning of the plot was a bit too harsh for my taste, but midway through the book I was hooked, lost alongside naïve, yet unexpectedly wise Graeber. Even though the end took me by surprise, I cannot deny liking the irony there.

Brilliant on so many levels. We were studying the Stanford Prison Experiment in psychology, which led me to read Ordinary Men, which led me to read this. And I honestly think this is the better of the three for explaining why good people do bad things.A soldier tries on the role of a civilian, tries to balance following orders with making his own life, and struggles with disillusionment and love. My first aquaintance with the works of Remarque. What can I say... This novel is perfect!Remarque doesn't take sides. He tells you a story. He tells it simply and honestly. Not important in what country you was born and what side you took - war is the same everywhere, it's always awfull and meaningless. The style of narration captivated me, it is so easy and clear! And the dialogs are brilliant! It is such a plesure to read them!Remarque shows us, that there is no bad nations - only bad people.
