Once Upon a Toad
This is a book tweens would like. It jumps around a little bit and can get a little confusing, but is overall enjoyable.

From the description, it sounds like a typical fairy tale book: an evil Stepsister, toads, flowers and diamonds. Once you get into the book, you'll realize that it's not a classic fairy tale. I really enjoyed this book.
Cat has to go live with her dad and his family while her mom is on the International Space Station. She likes her dad, her stepmom Iz and her little brother Geoffrey, but can't stand her evil stepsister Olivia. They are both in 7th grade and Olivia makes life at school and at home unbearable for Cat. So Cat calls her mom in space for help, but she doesn't get the kind of help she wants. Mom sends great aunt Abyssinia who is a bit on the strange side. After her visit, Cat starts spitting toads
I really enjoyed this over-the-top reworking of an old fairy tale. I found the characters fun and believable, the set-up enjoyable, and the payoff delightful. I loved that it's set in my town, and I dug the Great Aunt a lot. There's a tiny Betsy-Tacy nod embedded in this book, and it made me laugh out loud. I would have loved this even more had I read it at age 9 or so. Frederick has a sure hand with snappy dialogue, and her middle-schoolers are very true to life. Disclosure: I'm friends with
Oh my gosh, this book had me laughing out loud from its humor and wackiness all the way to the end! I highly recommend this to young girls who like a dash of fantasy and weird silliness!I loved how the two step sisters, Olivia and Cat, would constantly barf up diamonds and toads. (Much thanks to Cat's dumb fairy godmother.) The scene that had me laughing the most though, was when Cat and Olivia had their little brother barf (REAL barf) all over the bad guys. It was so gross! But AWESOME at the

A girl gets into a mouthful of trouble in this modern fractured fairy tale, from the author of The Mother-Daughter Book Club. Once upon a time, Cat Starr lived with her astronaut mom in Houston. But when her mother gets sent on a long-term mission, Cat has to move to a far away land—her dad’s house, halfway across the country—and share a room with her real-life evil stepsister, Olivia. Just when Cat can’t take it anymore, Great-Aunt Abyssinia comes to the rescue. And things go from bad to worse. The next morning, Cat opens her mouth and a toad hops out! What’s more, when Olivia speaks, diamonds and flowers appear. How unfair is that? Before you can say "happily ever after," the girls are on the run from jewel thieves and a government agency. Can Cat save the day—and get rid of all those toads? This is an enchanting fractured fairy tale from acclaimed Mother-Daughter Book Club author Heather Vogel Frederick.Specify Epithetical Books Once Upon a Toad

A fun filled book that combines the modern times of now with Fairy Tale elements. It's very much of the story of the sister and evil Step-Sister, although with no evil Stepmother as Catriona's stepmother is actually nice. The story did feel fun and exciting at points with humor from a Fairy Godmother(Great-Aunt Abysinnia) who gives life lessons to be tackled instead of wishes. The humor was great, but some of the scenes felt weird and some things felt glossed over and a little rushed towards theThis is a book tweens would like.
