I reviewed this on the grounds of being a spinoff story to the central arc, which essentially it is. Karpyshyn has the luxury of crafting a story that isn't linked to choices made by the gamer so this story flows and provides some backstory to characters in the core storyline. The book can be consumed as a standalone but to be honest, not knowing the game will hurt your background knowledge. This novel is action packed and would take about the same time to play as reading so it's nice to sit

Well I would assume you are not going to be reading this book if you are not a fan of the Mass Effect series. And if you are a fan of the ME series then anything that gives you more insight into the story is highly welcome. I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first one, even a little more so.
